For the final event of her Met residency, Julia Bullock forgoes taking center stage in favor of curating and directing the performance of Hans Werner Henze’s El Cimarrón, the story of escaped Afro-Cuban slave Esteban Montejo. Praised as “vivid, seductive and otherworldly” (New York Times), this 75-minute recital for bass-baritone, flute, percussion, and guitar stars Bullock’s frequent collaborator Davóne Tines and the American Modern Opera Company (of which Bullock and Tines are both members), as well as Emi Ferguson, Jonny Allen, and Jordan Dodson. During the closing of her residency, Bullock reflects upon her artistic platform and the privilege it grants her to give voice to the voiceless. The ambitious El Cimarrón is a “tour-de-force sonic onslaught” (The Met), and a rewarding conclusion to Bullock’s season-long residency.
