From October 1–8, Julia Bullock stars in the Dutch premiere of Michel van der Aa’s multidisciplinary opera Upload. Performing alongside Roderick Williams, Bullock plays the role of a daughter who is forced to grapple with the repercussions of her father’s decision to renounce his physical body in exchange for a digital version of himself. The performance utilizes live music, film, and technology to present a compelling narrative about the implications of humanity and relationships in a highly technological world. The Dutch National Opera commissioned the performance under the stage direction of composer Michel van der Aa, with musical direction by Otto Tausk.
The New York Times praised the performance, highlighting their monologues, in which “melodies take flight: long, lyrical lines — lushly delivered by Bullock with rending emotion — that are amplified, complicated and contradicted by orchestral undercurrents.”
